Sharing the Big News May 19, 2006
When they arrived Monday night, we could hardly wait for my mom to open her belated Mother’s Day gift…but wait we did. To miss the traffic from Orange County, they left in the evening and didn’t arrive at our place until almost 10 pm, brought by a coworker/poker buddy of my father’s. After making chit-chat for a bit, and me getting sleepier by the moment (as pregnant women are wont to do), we finally bid their friend adieu and decided to proceed with the inflating of the mattress they would be sleeping on in our office/guest room.
But alas, nothing is ever easy with us…it turns out the mattress inflation device was battery-operated, and of course, we did not have the right size for the job. Luckily, Vons is just around the corner and Daniel dashed off to buy them as I eyed the clock and wondered when the heck we’d ever get around to sharing the news! When Daniel returned, we made quick work of setting up the bed and finally settled down on the couch to relax.
With my dad sacked out in his undershirt and my mom removing the wrapping paper with the deliberate hands of a neurosurgeon, the big moment had finally arrived. For a second, it seemed she didn’t know what to make of the photograph… was it one of those post-modern images that come with the frame when you buy it? When realization dawned a split-second later, the expression on her face was priceless.
Seeing the happiness in both of them, the tears of joy, was totally worth the wait. My dad even exclaimed at one point, ‘Now I don’t want to go on this trip!’ At that, I assured him that I’d still be pregnant when they got back.
Exhausted but relieved and thrilled to finally have the news out, we all got ready for bed. The next morning, Mom and Dad shared a rather personal revelation with us. It seems that as they were lying down, trying to fall asleep, my dad turned to her and said, ‘You know, I’ve never slept with a grandmother before!’
Just one of many firsts sure to come our way…

I must say after all the shock of clever announcement of this miracle, I’m still elated out of my senses with the thrill of this announcement. Even though this horrible picture looks like a painful moment, I assure you this was a moment of tremendous joy. We await this blessed event as only a grandparents can. Each day with the growth of our little bundle of joy we walk taller, step just a little higher, have less headaches and stress because we know there is a future that we will share universally with this much loved little beige bundle of joy. With the combination of these two very special people/parents, this is bound to be the smartest and best baby in the whole wide world! (We are sure no other grandparents have ever felt as proud as we are with this news! Ha! Ha!) We are so happy this event is being shared with everyone the world around. Thank you Yvonne and Daniel for letting us share this event step by step. We send lots of love and hugs to everyone as you read this. We know you share our love and excitment. Until the next little blurb on this blog, Tom and Bev
